After more than four years at the helm of Mediengründerzentrum NRW (MGZ), Managing Director Rainer Weiland will be leaving his position on 31 July 2025. Since taking office in February 2021, Weiland has realigned the institution and provided key impetus for the promotion of young media professionals.

Under his leadership, the advisory services for founders were significantly expanded, the alumni network was strengthened and the reach of the "MGZstart" scholarship programme was considerably increased. The number of applications doubled compared to previous years.

With the introduction of the "MGZsheroes" funding programme, Weiland focused on targeted support for FLINTA* founders. The programme was recognised nationwide and is considered a model for similar initiatives in other federal states.

The positive developments during his time in office were recognised by various parties. Walid Nakschbandi, Managing Director of the Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, praised Weiland's strategic course and his instinct for young talent. Cologne's Lord Mayor Henriette Reker and NRW Media Minister Nathanael Liminski also emphasised the lasting impact of his work on the creative start-up scene.

The successor will be announced shortly.
