The German film industry can look forward to a significant financial injection: the German government has announced that it will double state film funding from next year. In future, a total of 250 million euros will be channelled into the German Federal Film Fund (DFFF) and the German Motion Picture Fund (GMPF) each year. Together with additional funding, the total budget will rise to around 310 million euros.
With this increase, the government wants to sustainably strengthen Germany as an attractive production location for film and television. Minister of State for Media Wolfram Weimer describes the reform as a "soundtrack to a new beginning" and emphasises that the film promotion funds will now be equipped at an internationally competitive level. Federal Minister of Finance Lars Klingbeil emphasises that the investments in the film industry have an important cultural and economic significance and are money well invested for culture in Germany.
The increased funding is primarily intended to help realise innovative projects, improve the international visibility of German productions and secure jobs in the industry. The German government is thus emphasising the role of film as an important economic factor and cultural ambassador.
For the film industry, this means better planning security and new opportunities to position Germany even more strongly as a film location - a step that has met with great approval throughout the industry.
