Last week, the German Federal Film Board (FFA) sent out a preliminary version of the film list for the federal government's new cultural cinema funding programme. This gives cinemas and filmmakers an overview for the first time of which works will be considered in the upcoming funding period. The list includes all feature-length films shown in German cinemas in 2024 and serves as the basis for the new reference-based points system.

The FFA has now announced further details at the 25th Film Art Fair in Leipzig. The fair offered professionals from the arthouse sector the opportunity to view films before their cinema release and discuss their potential - and also served as a platform to present the planned changes to cinema funding.

In future, cinemas that attract a particularly large number of visitors for selected films will receive correspondingly more points. This points system will be incorporated directly into the funding calculation. The aim is to provide greater support for culturally valuable films and promote diversity in German cinema.

Applications for the new funding are expected to be possible at the beginning of November 2025 via the FFA's service portal. The introduction of the reference-based system marks an important step towards a more transparent and fairer distribution of funds and underlines the importance of cinematic art and cultural diversity for the German cinema landscape.
