Germany's cinemas should shine again - at least on paper. Wolfram Weimer, Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), has presented the new "Liebling Kino" programme bonus. A total of 7 million euros is available to support cinemas that stand out with creative programmes and special film series.
The aim is clear: cinemas should be strengthened as cultural meeting places. Smaller cinemas in particular should benefit from this so that they can show films outside of the mainstream and inspire their audiences with innovative ideas. "We want to make the magic of the big screen visible and promote unusual film programmes," says Weimer.
Cinemas of all sizes that stand out with original concepts are supported - from themed film series and special events to projects that involve local communities. The funding is not just a financial subsidy, but also a statement: cinemas are more than just outlets for popcorn and blockbusters, they are the cultural heart of our cities.
The application phase for the award will start this year. Cinemas applying must submit their concepts - a jury will then assess which projects have the potential to enrich audiences and culture alike.
With "Liebling Kino", the federal government is sending a clear signal: cinema is culture - and culture should be promoted.
