According to a report by Bloomberg, Legendary Entertainment has made a takeover bid for Lionsgate Studios. No details of the terms have been disclosed as yet. Representatives from both companies declined to comment.

A takeover would bring film franchises such as „Dune“, „John Wick“, „The Hunger Games“ and „Saw“ together under one roof. For Legendary, the purchase could also open up the possibility of distributing its own films in cinemas in future.

Legendary had already signalled its interest in Lionsgate last year. The European media groups Banijay and Mediawan have also expressed interest in the US studio, but have not yet submitted any formal offers.

Following the publication of the report, Lionsgate’s share price rose by more than 15 per cent. The company’s market capitalisation thus stood at around 3.6 billion US dollars. It remains to be seen whether a takeover will go ahead.
