Literary film adaptation. Shoemaker Julius Kraus lives a secluded life on the outskirts of a Bavarian village community. He is drawn deeper and deeper into the maelstrom of dramatic political events between 1918 and Hitler's seizure of power in 1933, until an inheritance from the USA and the revelation of his Jewish identity become his undoing.
