The film adaptation of the award-winning novel "Lies About My Mother" by Daniela Dröscher is taking shape: On Monday, the first take for the new cinema production by TOBIS Film was shot at the Bavaria Studios in Munich. Directed by Aron Lehmann and starring Rosalie Thomass, the film is a moving drama that captures the dynamics of a family in the 1980s and a woman's search for self-determination.

High-calibre cast and creative signature

In addition to Rosalie Thomass, who not only plays the lead role of Cornelia but also wrote the screenplay, the film also stars Golo Euler, Elise Lindner, Juliane Köhler, Anneke Kim Sarnau, Johanna Gastdorf and Rainer Laupichler. The film is directed by Cristian Pirjol.

Producers Timm Oberwelland and Sebastian Zühr emphasise the emotional depth of the film: "Lies About My Mother tells the inspiring story of a woman fighting for self-determination and dignity. It is thought-provoking and demands the courage to question social expectations."

A poetic look at a moving topic

Director Aron Lehmann and screenwriter Rosalie Thomass rely on a narrative perspective that allows the audience to look at the world through the eyes of the child Ela. "It's time to take on new perspectives and tell female stories that have often been neglected in cinema"according to Lehmann and Thomass.

The film sheds light on a family in provincial West Germany in the 1980s, in which the mother Cornelia's body weight becomes the central conflict. Her husband Werner (Golo Euler) sees her excess weight as the reason for his professional and social failures. Daughter Ela (Elise Lindner) is increasingly caught in an emotional conflict between her parents and their contradictory truths.

Filming locations and cinema release

Filming will take place in Bavaria between 17 March and 1 April and will then continue in North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and on the Adriatic coast. The cinema release is planned for 2026. The film is being produced in collaboration with ZDF and with the support of various film funding institutions.

Lies About My Mother" is a film that is not only deeply moving, but is also told with lightness and subtle humour. A cinematic experience that questions social conventions and celebrates female empowerment.
