After a turbulent year with hesitant buyers, rising costs and the gradual withdrawal of traditional US studios, it is clear that the independent film market is facing another turning point - or is already in the midst of one.

US studios hesitate - international ratings under pressure

The noticeable withdrawal of US cinema distributors last year had a direct impact on the valuation of international independent productions. Without firm commitments from the US market, films are rapidly losing their global appeal. Producers and sellers must therefore rethink their financing and distribution strategies - precise data analyses are becoming increasingly important in this environment.

Global rights instead of territorial sales - streamers take over

With increasing market consolidation, streaming providers such as Netflix, Apple TV+ and Amazon Prime are pursuing an aggressive rights policy: global rights for mass-market productions are replacing the traditional territory model. Apple's pre-purchase of "Tenzing" for 40 million US dollars and Netflix's deal for "Monsanto" (34 million) are recent examples of this trend. Smaller national distributors are finding it more difficult to secure high-calibre content as a result.

Streaming displaces cinema: digital strategies dominate

Digital platforms were among the most active buyers at festivals and markets such as AFM 2024 and EFM 2025. Whether SVoD, AVoD or hybrid models - streaming strategies with exclusive content are clearly in focus. Demand is either for high-priced projects with well-known names or leanly produced content with fast revenue potential. Platforms such as Max and Peacock are already securing titles for their 2025-2026 portfolios.

Festival sales: only star power convinces

Despite the overall cautious mood, selected festival deals continue to signal market confidence - but only for titles with a strong line-up. For example, A24 secured Ruben Östlund's "The Entertainment System Is Down" for over USD 10 million. However, such sums remain exceptions, especially for mid-budget films without a clear US release plan.

AVOD models: focus on genre and reach

The global growth of advertising-financed streaming platforms (AVOD) offers new prospects, especially for genre productions. The AVOD market reached a volume of USD 49 billion in 2024 - with Europe becoming increasingly important. AVOD providers are finding a growing audience in the horror, thriller and western segments in particular and are expanding their rights libraries in a targeted manner.

Rising costs, falling margins

The after-effects of the production shutdown continue to be reflected in sharply higher fees and production costs. Many independent distributors without direct output deals or pay-1 partnerships are struggling with high minimum guarantees and weak sales in the home entertainment segment. At the same time, medium-sized productions are coming under increasing pressure to survive between big-budget and micro-projects.

New models: co-exclusivity and second window strategies

To hedge risks, studios are increasingly experimenting with co-exclusivity and staggered licence windows. These models promise new sources of revenue - but require detailed knowledge of international licence structures and streaming rates. For producers and rights traders, the strategic organisation of these deals is becoming a key competence.

Outlook: Orientation in a fragmented market

Despite the uncertainties, Cannes remains a key seismograph for the future of independent film. One thing is clear: the rules of the game have changed. Those who understand streaming dynamics, manage rights strategically and have the cost structure under control can derive opportunities from the market distortion. Without these prerequisites, however, it will be difficult to survive in 2025 and beyond.

FILMTAKE reports in detail.

Image generated with AI, chat GPT

Wenn sich im Mai erneut die Pforten des Marché du Film in Cannes öffnen, blickt die globale Filmwirtschaft gespannt auf das, was kommt.
