A recent special evaluation by the German Federal Film Board (FFA) confirms the unbroken popularity of German comedies in cinemas: nine of the ten most popular German films since 2000 belong to this genre. With around 11.7 million tickets sold, Michael Bully Herbig's \"Der Schuh des Manitu\" tops the list. Other top places are occupied by the \"Fack ju G\u00f6hte\" series, Til Schweiger's \"Honig im Kopf\" and \"Keinohrhasen\" as well as \"7 Zwerge - M\u00e4nner allein im Wald\". The only exception in the top 10 is the drama \"Perfume\" by Tom Tykwer.<\/p>

The publication \"German films over time\"<\/strong> analyses market shares, audience structures, perception and international presence of German (co-)productions since the year 2000. The average market share of German films during this period was 22 percent, with a peak of 35 percent in 2020, a year dominated by the pandemic. Since 2010, an increasing proportion of minority co-productions among the most successful German titles can be seen.<\/p>

A look at the distribution of directors shows that 16 of the 121 most-viewed German films were directed by women - a proportion that is higher than that of international productions. What is striking, however, is a decline in the so-called attendance reach: while before the pandemic, up to 30 per cent of the population saw at least one German film in the cinema every year, this figure was only 14 per cent in 2024. Nevertheless, the reception of German productions among active cinema-goers remains positive.<\/p>
