After more than 20 years at the helm of the World Cinema Fund (WCF), Vincenzo Bugno will step down at the end of 2025. According to the Berlinale, Bugno would like to devote more time to his curatorial duties at the Bolzano Film Festival Bolzano and the TorinoFilmLab.

Bugno has worked for the Berlin International Film Festival since 2004 and was instrumental in the founding and development of the WCF. Under his leadership, the funding fund developed into an internationally recognised institution for the support of film projects from regions with a weak production infrastructure. The aim of the WCF is to make the global film industry more decentralised, more diverse and fairer. Since its foundation, around 370 projects have been supported. The founding partner and main sponsor to date is the German Federal Cultural Foundation.

In addition to his management role at the WCF, Bugno was a Berlinale delegate for Italy, the Maghreb and Mashreq for many years. From 2014 to 2019, he was also a member of the selection committee for the Berlinale competition.

Berlinale Director Tricia Tuttle honoured Bugno's many years of commitment: "With his vision, his expertise and his passion, Vincenzo Bugno has shaped the World Cinema Fund and launched many exceptional films." Numerous funded productions have been shown at major international festivals and distributed internationally.

Bugno himself described his years at the WCF as a "privilege and a learning process" and emphasised the importance of funding institutions that enable cultural exchange in a global context: "In difficult times like these, we need European institutions with a global perspective."

The Berlinale has already launched the successor programme. The future head of the WCF will also be responsible for the European Film Market (EFM) Toolbox programme, which has been supporting producers from underrepresented countries in building international networks since 2022. A vacancy is planned for late summer to ensure an orderly handover.

Tanja Meissner, Director of Berlinale Pro* and EFM, announced a careful selection process: "Finding Vincenzo Bugno's successor is a big task. We would like to thank him for his extraordinary commitment and also our partners for their ongoing support."

Bugno will continue to lead the WCF until the end of 2025.
