Series and films were available anytime and anywhere - it was new, convenient and fascinating. However, this limitless availability now has a price: content is losing value. In a world where "everything is always available", there is no longer any real incentive to switch on.

The answer to this? A well-known concept from the classic TV world is celebrating its comeback: Windowing - i.e. the staggered publication of content across time, regions and platforms.

Less is more - when it comes to timing

Instead of releasing new series and films worldwide on the same day, streaming platforms are rethinking their approach. Titles are once again being released in stages: first in cinemas, later exclusively for paying subscribers, then perhaps on free TV or on advertising-based services (AVOD). This temporal scarcity makes content something special again. And that is exactly what Value - emotionally and economically.

Access becomes a commodity

In an oversaturated market, it is no longer enough to simply offer "lots of content". If you want to reach people today, you have to Access play. Exclusive time slots, premium advance access or regional publications generate excitement and conversation - and therefore engagement.

Netflix, Disney+, Amazon & Co. are therefore testing new models: For example, content can only be accessed for a fortnight, is only available in certain countries or is initially only accessible for higher-priced subscription levels. This artificial scarcity is not a form of control, but a deliberate attraction.

Why this is important

The challenges are clear: growth rates are stagnating, production costs are rising and attention spans are falling. Platforms can no longer afford to invest billions in content that disappears into the digital archive after a short time. Intelligent windowing allows a single title to be utilised multiple times - and marketed more effectively.

In addition, it is not only the large platforms that benefit, but also independent producers and distributors. Those who offer their content on a staggered basis via different markets and models have More room for negotiation and can collaborate more effectively with different partners.

Conclusion: Access creates meaning

Streaming is changing. It is not the size of a catalogue that counts, but how and when content is made available. The classic principle of "having to wait" may seem out of date - but in today's affluent society, this is precisely what creates desire again.

For the industry, this means no longer asking "Who are we selling our film to?", but "How do we scale access to maximise value?" Because in future, it won't just be the content that determines success - but the right strategy around its availability.

FILMTAKE reports in detail.

Image generated with AI, chat GPT

In den Anfangsjahren galt Streaming als die große Revolution der Unterhaltungsbranche.
