More visibility for East German perspectives on the big screen - that is the aim of a new workshop programme that PROG (Producers of Germany) is launching together with Netflix. In November 2025, the three-day programme entitled \"East German Perspectives in Film and Series\" will offer 20 creatives from East Germany the opportunity for further training, exchange and networking.<\/h4>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

At the centre of the programme are screenwriterinside, director<\/em>and producers who live in or come from eastern Germany. They are to receive targeted support in order to overcome structural hurdles in the industry - such as access to financing, platforms or production partners. The application phase runs until 22 August 2025.<\/p>

\"We want to increase not only the quantity, but also the quality of films and series that take an authentic East German perspective,\" explains Alexandra Krampe, board member at PROG and contact person for the project. Netflix is supporting the programme both financially and in terms of content. Katja Hofem, Vice President Content DACH at Netflix, emphasises: \"Great stories can come from anywhere - and East German voices have been heard far too rarely until now.\"<\/p>

The workshop programme is also a reaction to the results of a recent survey conducted by the media research institute GOLDMEDIA in spring 2025 with the support of Netflix. According to the survey, many filmmakers of East German origin or based in East Germany feel disadvantaged - both in terms of market access and career opportunities. Only twelve per cent of those surveyed believe that East German perspectives are adequately represented in fictional formats, and just twenty per cent in the documentary sector.<\/p>

Four out of five participants in the study would like to see greater visibility for East German topics and biographies on cinema, television and streaming screens.
