17 July 2025<\/em> - The German Film Academy has presented new eligibility criteria for the German Film Awards 2026. The updated regulations, which were developed in close consultation with the membership and approved by the Executive Board, are intended to strengthen key creative positions and allow more flexibility for international co-productions.<\/p>

A stronger focus on creative performance<\/h3>

In future, the creative involvement of writers will be considered on an equal footing with directing and production in the definition of a \"German film\". The casting of central trades - including camera, editing, music and production design - as well as the leading role will also play a greater role in the assessment. The aim is to make creative work from Germany more visible and to strengthen it structurally.<\/p>

Adjustments to financing and language<\/h3>

The new guidelines allow authorisation from a German financing share of 25 %, provided there is a substantial creative contribution from Germany. For films with at least 50 % of German financing, further facilitations apply: They can also be authorised with international directing or screenplay teams and in a non-German language - provided that central trades are staffed from Germany.<\/p>

Evaluation: TV embargo no longer applies<\/h3>

One major change concerns exploitation: the previous embargo period for television broadcasts before the award ceremony no longer applies, provided that the requirements of the Film Subsidy Act are met. This enables a more flexible exploitation chain without jeopardising access to the competition.<\/p>

Submission period in September<\/h3>

Film producers and distributors can submit their works from 2 to 23 September 2025 via the official website of the German Film Awards.
