Although European productions account for around 20 % of the content on streaming platforms, they are far less popular with audiences: US content accounts for 61 % of viewing time. The dependence on Hollywood also remains high in cinemas: two thirds of all tickets are sold for US films, while European productions only account for just under a third.<\/p><p data-start=\"1010\" data-end=\"1255\">What's more, the major distribution channels - YouTube, Netflix, Disney+, Amazon Prime and others - are almost exclusively in non-European hands. They not only determine what is shown, but also skim off the lion's share of the revenue.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"1257\" data-end=\"1298\">Rapidly shifting market shares<\/h3><p data-start=\"1299\" data-end=\"1649\">A look at the 100 media companies with the highest revenues in Europe illustrates the shift in power: US groups such as Comcast, Disney, Netflix and Google now account for around 40 % of revenues. In the same period, the share of European companies has fallen from 67 % (2016) to just 59 % (2023) - a trend that is continuing to intensify.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"1651\" data-end=\"1694\">Cultural and economic risks<\/h3><p data-start=\"1695\" data-end=\"1744\">The EU warns of the consequences of this development:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1745\" data-end=\"2033\"><li data-start=\"1745\" data-end=\"1833\"><p data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1833\"><strong data-start=\"1747\" data-end=\"1775\">Economic dependence<\/strong> - Profits and data flows are increasingly being channelled abroad.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1834\" data-end=\"1929\"><p data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1929\"><strong data-start=\"1836\" data-end=\"1862\">Cultural displacement<\/strong> - European stories and voices are losing visibility.<\/p><\/li><li data-start=\"1930\" data-end=\"2033\"><p data-start=\"1932\" data-end=\"2033\"><strong data-start=\"1932\" data-end=\"1955\">Endangered diversity<\/strong> - creative freedom and journalistic independence are coming under pressure.<\/p><\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2201\">The dominance of global platforms could threaten the existence of news media in particular, which are already weakened by shrinking advertising revenues.<\/p><h3 data-start=\"2203\" data-end=\"2230\">EU calls for a change of course<\/h3><p data-start=\"2231\" data-end=\"2501\">With the report, the Commission is sending a clear signal: Europe urgently needs to invest in its own structures - from the promotion of European streaming offerings to a stronger legal framework that ensures diversity and fair competitive conditions.<\/p><p data-start=\"2503\" data-end=\"2710\">The message is clear: without a strategic strengthening of its own media landscape, Europe risks becoming a mere consumer of foreign content -
