While the volume of deals remains manageable, the festival has already made headlines: A horror film in the Midnight Madness section sparked a $15 million bidding war, Gus Van Sant's Dead Man's Wire went to a new US distributor for a seven-figure sum, and two new providers are now focusing on their own cinema releases.

Focus on horror and new sales strategies

Horror films remain the most reliable source of income in the independent sector. At TIFF, newcomer Row K Entertainment made the headlines by acquiring the US and Canadian rights to Dead Man's Wire secured. At the same time, Black Bear is focussing on self-distribution: the biopic Christywhich Black Bear produced and financed itself, will be released in cinemas in November and marks the start of the newly established US distribution activities.

The movements of these two companies show that the post-lockdown landscape is slowly shifting. Even if no "blockbuster deal" has yet fuelled the festival mood, these early steps show that strategically designed cinema circuits, especially in commercially stable genres, offer opportunities in the long term.

Be careful with purchases: Buyers check carefully

Even major players such as Neon, A24, Sony Pictures Classics and Focus Features are reluctant to fill their cinema slots. The drastic drop in Pay 1 and Pay 2 fees on streaming platforms is forcing distributors to scrutinise every acquisition for profitability. A film must therefore offer a clear revenue opportunity both in the cinema and later digitally. Among the titles that are generating particular attention are The Testament of Ann Lee, Late Fame, Couture and California Schemin'.

Who does which deals?

Major studios continue to focus on prestige and documentary material, often with a link between cinema and streaming windows. Disney labels such as Searchlight Pictures and Nat Geo demonstrate this with Werner Herzog's Ghost Elephants or Chai Vasarhelyi's adventure documentary Lost in the Jungle.

Amazon MGM Studios combines cinemas and Prime Video, Apple Studios focuses on awards-worthy dramas and documentaries, while new players such as Black Bear (Christy) and Row K (Dead Man's Wire) are seeking their own paths in US cinema. Traditional distributors such as Focus Features, Lionsgate and IFC are also continuing to experiment with genre films, biopics and arthouse material.

What TIFF 2025 means for the industry

The festival shows that the industry is operating in a cautious but strategic mode. Horror films remain the safest bet, new distribution companies are relying on long-term cinema pipelines and buyers are calculating very carefully. For industry professionals, this means focusing on films with a clear target group, striking early at festivals and observing developments at TIFF as a signpost for future indie distribution strategies.

FILMTAKE reports in detail.

Image generated with AI, chat GPT

Die Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) 2025 nähert sich der Halbzeit – und es zeigt sich, dass der Event weniger als Kaufrausch, sondern vielmehr als Gradmesser für die Zukunft des…

[51,50

post-30402","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-filmwirtschaft","category-wirtschaft
["GET
