In a surprising move, Netflix has entered into exclusive negotiations to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). The talks concern both the renowned film and television studio and the streaming service HBO Max. This would allow the streaming giant to massively expand its portfolio and position itself even more clearly as a dominant force in the global media market.<\/p>

The background to the talks is an intense bidding battle: In addition to Netflix, Paramount Skydance and Comcast were in the running. While Paramount, under CEO David Ellison, wanted to acquire the entire group, Netflix and Comcast focussed on the studio and streaming assets. Industry representatives are also expressing clear concerns: the Directors Guild of America and the cinema operators' organisation Cinema United are warning of a potential weakening of the cinema landscape. Critics fear that Netflix could restrict the release model for big screen productions in favour of streaming content, which would have an impact on cinemas and the local film industry.<\/p>

Such a move would be a groundbreaking change for the film industry: Netflix could not only massively expand its own content offering, but also fundamentally shift the dynamic between studios, streaming and cinema.
