{"id":34793,"date":"2026-05-22T12:58:44","date_gmt":"2026-05-22T11:58:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/intelligence.ensider.de\/?p=34793"},"modified":"2026-05-22T13:00:03","modified_gmt":"2026-05-22T12:00:03","slug":"dogma-25-germany-a-radical-manifesto-for-a-new-wave-of-auteur-cinema","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/intelligence.ensider.de\/en\/2026\/05\/22\/dogma-25-germany-radikales-manifest-fuer-ein-neues-autorenkino\/","title":{"rendered":"DOGMA 25 Germany: A Radical Manifesto for a New Wave of Auteur Cinema"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-elementor-type=\"wp-post\" data-elementor-id=\"34793\" class=\"elementor elementor-34793\" data-elementor-post-type=\"post\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-eb8271d elementor-section-full_width elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default creativo-sticky-disabled\" data-id=\"eb8271d\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;,&quot;enable_creativo_sticky&quot;:&quot;disabled&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-6bbcb817\" data-id=\"6bbcb817\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74b76af4 elementor-widget__width-initial elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74b76af4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"532\">On the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, with <strong data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"295\">DOGMA 25 Germany<\/strong> introduces a new cinematic movement that deliberately places itself within the tradition of Danish Dogma 95 cinema \u2013 whilst at the same time seeking to formulate a response to the current state of the digital, highly industrialised film industry.<\/p><p data-start=\"534\" data-end=\"898\">The project has been initiated by five leading figures in contemporary German-language cinema: <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Tom Tykwer<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Helene Hegemann<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">\u0130lker \u00c7atak<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Nora Fingscheidt<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Kurdwin Ayub<\/span><\/span>. As part of the project, each of them is developing their own feature film.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1k2h5jp\" data-start=\"900\" data-end=\"945\">Cinema as a counter-model to the logic of production<\/h3><p data-start=\"947\" data-end=\"1282\">DOGMA 25 Germany sees itself as a deliberate alternative to current production conditions: rising budgets, fragmented funding models and an increasing focus on marketable formats. The initiative aims to break with this logic and re-envision cinema as an experimental, risky and collective process.<\/p><p data-start=\"1284\" data-end=\"1496\">The movement explicitly builds on <strong data-start=\"1322\" data-end=\"1334\">DOGMA 95<\/strong> which was shaped in the 1990s by Lars von Trier and Thomas Vinterberg and had a lasting influence on European auteur cinema through its radical rules.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"lfltpo\" data-start=\"1498\" data-end=\"1536\">Ten rules for radical reduction<\/h3><p data-start=\"1538\" data-end=\"1738\">At the heart of the project is a manifesto comprising ten binding rules, referred to as a \u201evow of chastity\u201c. These are intended to deliberately restrict creative processes in order to expand artistic freedom.<\/p><p data-start=\"1740\" data-end=\"1788\">The key requirements include, amongst others:<\/p><ul data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"2275\"><li data-section-id=\"qznmd6\" data-start=\"1790\" data-end=\"1830\">handwritten screenplays<\/li><li data-section-id=\"13s4ggq\" data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1878\">at least 50 per cent of the film without dialogue<\/li><li data-section-id=\"1l1tuh1\" data-start=\"1879\" data-end=\"1933\">Avoiding the use of the internet in all creative processes<\/li><li data-section-id=\"18kysqk\" data-start=\"1934\" data-end=\"1977\">a maximum of ten people behind the camera<\/li><li data-section-id=\"7jjxk5\" data-start=\"1978\" data-end=\"2017\">Filmed on location at real, original sites<\/li><li data-section-id=\"15p3yn2\" data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2079\">no make-up or digital\/aesthetic body manipulation<\/li><li data-section-id=\"by1el\" data-start=\"2080\" data-end=\"2152\">props that are exclusively borrowed, found or reused<\/li><li data-section-id=\"72vsgg\" data-start=\"2153\" data-end=\"2199\">Completion within twelve months<\/li><li data-section-id=\"y87o74\" data-start=\"2200\" data-end=\"2275\">a significantly reduced budget with no specific requirements regarding the content of the funding<\/li><\/ul><p data-start=\"2277\" data-end=\"2394\">The set of guidelines concludes with a deliberately open-ended maxim: the film should be made \u201eas if it were the last\u201c.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1tq7rmc\" data-start=\"2396\" data-end=\"2433\">Production structure and funding<\/h3><p data-start=\"2435\" data-end=\"2668\">In organisational terms, DOGMA 25 Germany is supported by several established European production companies, including <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">X Films Creative Pool<\/span><\/span>, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Zentropa Germany<\/span><\/span> and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">if... Productions<\/span><\/span>.<\/p><p data-start=\"2670\" data-end=\"2912\">For hire, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">X Hire<\/span><\/span> intended, whilst <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">TrustNordisk<\/span><\/span> will be responsible for international distribution. The first funding organisation to do so is the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">MOIN Filmf\u00f6rderung Hamburg Schleswig-Holstein<\/span><\/span> involved.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1esxpzl\" data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"2954\">A response to an industry in flux<\/h3><p data-start=\"2956\" data-end=\"3279\">The project\u2019s initiators also cite structural changes in the film industry as a reason for launching the project. They argue that cinema is increasingly shaped by algorithms, standardised production methods and economic considerations of security. DOGMA 25 aims to counter this with a deliberately minimalist, craft-oriented model.<\/p><p data-start=\"3281\" data-end=\"3522\">In this context, the production process itself becomes an artistic statement: small teams, limited resources and working in a shared physical space are intended to bring spontaneous decisions and unpredictability back to the forefront.<\/p><h3 data-section-id=\"1wl9jya\" data-start=\"3524\" data-end=\"3552\">A deliberate experiment<\/h3><p data-start=\"3554\" data-end=\"3801\">DOGMA 25 Germany does not see itself as a style, but as a working method. The restrictions are not viewed as a loss, but as a productive condition \u2013 as an attempt to free cinema from its current logic of production.<\/p><p data-start=\"3803\" data-end=\"4041\">Whether this will actually give rise to a new movement remains to be seen.
