The 73-page publication provides an overview of the production and provision of accessible film versions and sets out the requirements within the production and distribution processes. Those involved included experts and representatives from AVÜ e.V., DBSV, Hörfilmakademie, Hörfilm e.V., NDR, Seven. One, Weltkino Filmverleih and ZDF.

In film production, this issue is becoming increasingly important, particularly as a result of the provisions of the amended Film Promotion Act (FFG). This guide explains the requirements for accessible versions of funded productions and how these should be made available across the various stages of distribution. Consequently, this issue affects not only post-production but also the planning and costing stages of a project.

The guide specifically addresses the Costs of an accessible film version. These may be included as a separate item within post-production in FFA production grant applications. The work mentioned includes, amongst other things, the drafting of the script, editorial approval, voice-over fees, language direction and technical adaptations for different distribution versions. For producers, this means that it is particularly important to factor in these services at an early stage in the production budget.

The question of Responsibility is addressed in the guide. Among other things, it covers who commissions the production, who bears the costs, and how the accessible versions are made available through the various distribution channels. The guide takes into account cinemas, television, media libraries and streaming platforms.

Another key area is the use of artificial intelligence. Among other things, the guide examines AI-assisted audio description and subtitling. It addresses both the technical possibilities and the need for human review and editing.

For the cinema industry, the publication also outlines various ways in which audio description and subtitles can be made accessible to people with hearing and visual impairments. In addition to traditional solutions, digital applications such as the Greta app are also covered.

The guide is therefore intended as a practical guide for producers, distributors and other market participants, to help them systematically take accessibility into account at every stage, from production planning through to financing and production, right up to subsequent exploitation.

Source: Kinobrindgänger gGmbH, „Guide to Accessible Film Versions“

Image: © Unsplash

Die Kinoblindgänger gemeinnützige GmbH hat den „Leitfaden Barrierefreie Filmfassung“ veröffentlicht.
