Set in Rome between 1938 and 1943, Elena's War recounts the extraordinary story of Elena Di Porto, a strong, independent and courageous Roman Jewish woman who defied the fascist regime to save many lives and marked the history of the Jewish ghetto of Rome during fascism and the Nazi occupation. A courageous woman in dark times To be different takes courage: you risk marginalization and punishment. Rebels, however, are the first to sense when something limits their freedom, and they react even when alone. That's what Elena does. Elena is a woman outside the box, separated from her husband, she wears pants, smokes, drinks and plays cue, which is why in the ghetto of Rome they call her "Elena the madwoman". Her rebellious and indomitable temperament leads her to clash several times with the fascists who infest the neighborhood. Arrested on several occasions, Elena does not stop. When the Nazis occupy Rome, she joins the resistance and manages to discover in advance the plans for the roundup of the ghetto, which took place on October 16, 1943. She tries to warn her fellow citizens, but how can she make herself heard when you are considered just a "crazy"?
