The film is a reinterpretation of one of Bremen's best-known love stories, based on a true correspondence. At the end of the 19th century, two young women share their ideas of freedom and future in endless letters and accompany each other on their search for their own life plan. At a time when marriage for women can mean breaking out of the strict corset of the parental home, Bertha and Matti try to find their own individual path between great love, female independence and life as a wife and mother.
