It is about a man’s dream to travel to Syracuse in the island of Sicily, hindered by the fact that he is living in East Germany. In the early 19th century, Johann Gottfried Seume, an editor from Leipzig, decides to embark on a trip to Italy, just like Johann Wolfgang Goethe and many others did before him. This is pretty fashionable among the rich and famous at the time, and for many it’s part of their Grand Tour. But Seume isn’t rich or famous. He doesn’t do his traveling in a carriage or with an entourage. He walks on foot.
