The year is 1933 in Oregon: widowed Samuel Murphy (Ethan Hawke) is fighting for custody of his daughter Penny in a labour camp. However, under the control of the unscrupulous warden Clancy (Russell Crowe), he becomes involved in a risky gold smuggling operation. On the run, however, he faces not only the dangers of the wilderness but also betrayal within his own ranks.
