Im Jahr 1982 gründeten die beiden Frankfurter Kinobetreiber Karl Baumgartner und Reinhard Brundig den Pandora Filmverleih. Der Name war inspiriert von G.W. Pabsts Film „Die Büchse der Pandora“. Mit den ersten Filmen, die unter diesem Label herauskamen, war die thematische Ausrichtung klar: Filme wie YOL von Yilmaz Günay, NOSTALGHIA von Andrei Tarkowski oder FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE von Chen Kaige standen für hochambitioniertes internationales Arthouse-Kino. Schon bald kam es zu engen Arbeitsbeziehungen zwischen Pandora und Regisseuren wie Aki Kaurismäki und Jim Jarmusch. Doch erst mit Jane Campions THE PIANO gelang Pandora der erste große kommerzielle Durchbruch. Das Konzept, exzellente cineastische Meisterwerke international renommierter Filmemacher einem deutschen Publikum zu präsentieren, ging auf, und Pandora Film wurde zu einem der profiliertesten Verleiher in diesem Marktsegment. Heute präsentiert sich Pandora Film als unabhängiges Produktions-, Marketing- und Vertriebsunternehmen mit dem Anspruch, durch Qualität statt Masse weiter zu wachsen. Im Interesse aller Filmbegeisterten ist Pandora Film stets bemüht, gegen den allgemeinen Medienkonformismus zu arbeiten, um die Existenz des Films auch als Kunstform zu sichern. Mithilfe von rund 12 hochmotivierten Mitarbeitern wird dieser anspruchsvolle Kampf fortgesetzt.

With the first films that came out under this label, the thematic focus was clear: Films such as YOL by Yilmaz Günay, NOSTALGHIA by Andrei Tarkowski or FAREWELL MY CONCUBINE by Chen Kaige all stood for highly ambitious International Art house Cinema. Before long, close working relationships were formed between Pandora and directors such as Aki Kaurismäki and Jim Jarmusch. But it was with Jane Campion’s THE PIANO, that Pandora made its first big commercial breakthrough. The concept of presenting excellent cinematographic masterpieces by internationally renowned filmmakers to a German audience paid off, and Pandora Film became one of the most distinguished Distributors within this segment of the market. Today Pandora Film presents itself as an Independent Production-, Marketing- and Distribution Company with the ambition of continuing to grow by means of quality rather than mass production. In the interest of all cinema enthusiasts, Pandora Film constantly strive to work against the general media conformity, in order to secure the existence of film also as an art form. With the help of about 12 highly motivated colleagues, this challenging battle continues.
