Amazon MGM Studios has signed a multi-year agreement with Sony Pictures Entertainment. As part of this partnership, Sony will take over the international theatrical distribution of four of the studio's upcoming films until March 2026. Amazon MGM's long-term goal is to establish its own distribution structure abroad.
It all starts with the film After the Hunt by director Luca Guadagnino, which opens in selected cinemas in the USA on 10 October and will be released more widely from 17 October. The psychological drama starring Julia Roberts, Ayo Edebiri and Andrew Garfield centres on the consequences of a serious accusation made by a student against a professor.
Other films that Sony will distribute internationally are
Mercya thriller starring Chris Pratt, which opens in US cinemas on 23 January 2026,
Crime 101a Heist film starring Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry, which will be released in North America on 13 February 2026,
Project Hail Marya science fiction adaptation of the novel by Andy Weir starring Ryan Gosling. The film will be directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller; the US release date is 20 March 2026.
Although the contract initially only covers four films, it is a long-term agreement. From the film Project Hail Mary Amazon MGM intends to distribute its own films directly abroad - in countries where the company opens its own branches. Sony will continue to provide support in all other regions.
Not covered by this deal is Sarah's Oila biographical drama about the US oil magnate Sarah Rector. Amazon will release this film exclusively in cinemas in the USA on 7 November 2025.
The first film that Amazon MGM will independently distribute internationally is the film adaptation of the novel Verity with Dakota Johnson, Josh Hartnett and Anne Hathaway. The cinema release in North America is planned for 15 May 2026.
