Who decides when we watch films? New release windows and licensing strategies are changing the economics of streaming services - and therefore the rules of the game for producers and platforms.
The strategy of streaming services is increasingly shifting from the pure amount of content to targeted control over Availability and timing. Platforms such as Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime Video now use Staggered publication windowsto optimally monetise content. Films are first released in cinemas or on premium VOD before they end up in the SVOD library.
This development has a direct impact on producers, distributors and platforms: The negotiating position over licences is becoming more important than the mere ownership of content. Large streaming providers benefit in particular as they can retain content and thus maximise revenue across multiple channels.
For the German film industry, this means that local providers and producers must also adapt their strategies in order to remain economically successful in an increasingly globalised streaming market. Licensing, release planning and the selection of suitable platforms are therefore becoming increasingly important.
In the current SVOD economy, it is no longer the quantity of content that is decisive, but who decides when and where films and series are available.
