With „On Screen“, Medienboard Berlin-Brandenburg is presenting an industry special as part of re:publica 2026 that focuses on the increasing convergence of film, series, games and immersive media. On 19 May in Berlin, representatives of the audiovisual industry will meet for talks, workshops and an interactive expo.
The programme focuses on current structural developments in the industry: the boom in short-format series formats (micro-dramas), international series markets such as the Korean Hallyu wave and transmedia exploitation strategies of established IPs such as „Babylon Berlin“. The programme thus addresses central questions of value creation in an increasingly fragmented media landscape.
The announced guests include director and author Tom Tykwer, video producer Sofia Kats and actor and author Lamin Leroy Gibba. The programme will be complemented by voices from comedy, production, games and media criticism, including Aurel Mertz, Sheri Hagen, Frank Joung and Matthias Dell. The programme will be hosted by Hadnet Tesfai.
In addition to creative perspectives, industrial policy and structural issues will also be discussed. Panels will deal with issues such as power relations, diversity and representation in the German film and series landscape as well as the room for manoeuvre of producers in the European market environment.
Industry representatives such as Christian Rohde (UFA GmbH), Kai Fischer (Constantin Entertainment) and Fawzi Mesmar (Ubisoft) will provide commercially relevant impulses, giving insights into the production logic between classic film and series production, the streaming economy and the games industry.
The „On Screen Space“ in the re:publica expo area at Station Berlin is designed as a hybrid innovation and meeting space. Between Babelsberg film archive props, indie games and XR applications, a place is being created that makes the transformation of the audiovisual media industry visible - from analogue film history to digital real-time ecosystems.
