In future, STUDIOCANAL will bring together all activities relating to its extensive film catalogue under the new label STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS. The strategy ranges from the restoration of historical films to their re-release in cinemas and on home entertainment platforms.
According to the company itself, STUDIOCANAL’s film library comprises more than 16,000 titles spanning over 100 years of film history. Over the past seven years, the company has invested around 25 million euros for the 4K restoration of just under 1,000 classic films.
Through STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS, these titles are now to be curated, restored and marketed internationally on an even larger scale. A key focus is on bringing selected classics back to the big screen.
The following are included in the starter pack „Terminator 2: Judgment Day“ About the programme. James Cameron’s film is returning to German cinemas to mark its 35th anniversary. Further restored classics are set to be released internationally under the new label.
„We are very proud to present STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS today,“ says Anna Marsh, CEO of STUDIOCANAL and Chief Content Officer of the CANAL+ Group. The label is intended to help preserve significant films whilst also reaching new generations with them.
At the same time, the initiative highlights the growing importance of the Catalogue business as part of the company’s strategy. STUDIOCANAL combines development, production, distribution and catalogue management and, according to its own figures, releases more than 100 cinema films and around 170 home entertainment titles each year. The existing catalogue is licensed and marketed worldwide and is being further expanded through strategic acquisitions.
With STUDIOCANAL CLASSICS, the library is intended to serve not only as an archive, but also as the actively managed part of the film business be positioned.
