The Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) is set to expand its role in the international film industry in 2026. With „TIFF: The Market“, an official film market is being launched for the first time, bringing together financing, packaging, pre-sales, project sales, work-in-progress presentations and transactions involving completed films, alongside the festival’s existing festival and acquisition activities.
This sees Toronto move further ahead in the international deal cycle. Whilst the festival has so far focused primarily on completed films, in future projects at earlier stages of development and financing will also be showcased to producers, financiers, sales agents and buyers. According to FilmTake, the new market will run from 10 to 16 September.
Initial examples illustrate the broader scope: in the case of „Copperhead“, a project that already boasts a high-profile cast is being offered on the market to international buyers, whilst „Bluefly“ focuses on global pre-sales in the run-up to production. In addition, work-in-progress projects are also being presented to potential buyers.
This opens up the opportunity for Toronto to compete more effectively with established industry markets such as the Marché du Film in Cannes, the Berlinale’s European Film Market and the American Film Market for international financing and distribution deals. The key factor will be whether the new market actually attracts transactions in the early stages of projects, thereby establishing September as a key date in the international film industry.
