According to the Association of Technical Services for Film and Television (VTFF), the promotion of Germany’s film heritage should be continued on a permanent basis beyond 2028. In a new position paper, the association calls on the federal and state governments to provide long-term planning certainty and support for investment in the technical infrastructure required for film restoration.
From the VTFF’s point of view, there is more at stake here than simply the preservation of historical films. Without a reliable regulatory framework, even highly specialised technical companies, skilled workers and expertise built up over decades could come under pressure. The association therefore regards the promotion of film heritage as a matter of Small and medium-sized enterprises, innovation and regional development policy.
„Support for film heritage is about far more than just promoting culture. It also safeguards technological expertise, skilled jobs and value creation in Germany,“ explains VTFF President Achim Rohnke.
In addition to ensuring that funding continues on a long-term basis, the VTFF calls for targeted support for investment in technical infrastructure. Furthermore, technical organisations should be involved at an early stage in the further development of the national film heritage strategy.
The restoration of historical films and ensuring their long-term accessibility require specialised companies, modern technologies and skilled professionals with expertise honed over many years. In its position paper, the VTFF therefore explicitly links the preservation of these structures to the economic future of the region.
