There is a new provider of analogue film production and post-production services in Vienna. With Character_ Manuel Götz, Stefanie Weberhofer and Markus Maicher have set up a company that offers a range of services relating to working with analogue film. The trio had previously worked at filmkoop wien for many years.

Character_ specialises in the scanning and mastering of analogue film material – from Super 8 through 16mm to 35mm. The range of services also includes film stock and development via partner laboratories. A camera hire service is set to be added in the future. The range of services is complemented by a Knowledge Hub and events centred on analogue film.

The launch comes at a time when there is renewed demand for analogue work, whilst the necessary infrastructure remains limited in many places. In Vienna, the Synchro laboratory had already closed in 2016. Character_ now aims to bring together key services for filmmakers in a single location.

The first projects and collaborations have already been carried out. These included, amongst other things, an exhibition in partnership with the EYE Film Museum in Amsterdam, as well as the digitisation of material for a new film by production designer Katharina Wöppermann.
