Studio Babelsberg is expanding its technological infrastructure with a view to further strengthening its position in the international market for film and content production. With the LEDCave and the new „Grey Stage“, two production facilities for hybrid and virtual film production have been opened on the studio site.

The LEDCave, measuring approximately 365 square metres, combines a 15-metre-long and five-metre-high LED volume with mobile LED walls and a movable LED ceiling. In-camera VFX, cloud technologies and generative AI enable virtual production environments in real time. This is intended to make production workflows more flexible and, amongst other things, reduce the need for location changes, set changes and parts of the subsequent post-production process.

The „Grey Stage“ complements the range of services on offer with green screen, motion capture and 3D and 4D scanning. Actors, movements, props and sets can be digitally captured and processed for use in visual effects, virtual sets or AI-based techniques.

For Studio Babelsberg, this is about more than just two new studios. In the long term, the technical systems are also set to be rolled out across the site’s other 19 studios. The aim is to gradually develop the studio campus into a high-tech production facility that brings together various forms of traditional and digital production under one roof.

„We are transforming Studio Babelsberg into a high-tech campus that combines the craft of filmmaking with new technologies,“ says Eike Wolf, Head of Studio Operations at Studio Babelsberg AG. The investment is intended to lay the groundwork for continuing to attract high-calibre German and international content productions to Babelsberg in the future.
