19 films are shown in the Competition will be competing for the Golden and Silver Bears, including a debut film and a documentary. Productions from 26 countries are represented. 17 films will be shown as world premieres. Eight of the films were directed or co-directed by women. Nine filmmakers have already presented earlier works at the Berlinale.

"We are very proud of the films in this year's Competition. They show the whole range of cinema and offer fascinating insights into different lives and places. There are intimate dramas that ask us to understand our human weaknesses and strengths; there are gentle comedies, but also the sharpest, blackest satires; there are films that pay homage to film greats and those that fully exploit the art form. Each of these unique works showcases filmmakers at the height of their craft. We are excited to see what Todd Haynes' jury will select from these deserving ranks as the winners of the Berlinale Golden and Silver Bears," says Artistic Director Tricia Tuttle.
