Sony plans to wind up the global visual effects company Pixomondo. According to the industry magazine Televisual ongoing projects are to be finalised before business operations are discontinued.
All locations are affected by the decision, including the German branch in Stuttgart. In addition to the traditional VFX business, the "Clara" unit, which specialises in virtual production, is also to be closed. There is the possibility for individual business units to be integrated into other structures within the Sony Group, in particular in Sony Pictures Imageworks.
Sony acquired Pixomondo in 2022. The previous CEO Jonny Slow had already announced his intention to leave the company in February 2026.
The development is causing considerable concern in the industry. The German studio RISE Visual Effects Studios stated that it was "deeply shocked" by the news and referred to the tense situation in the VFX sector. At the same time, structural problems were once again highlighted, in particular the inadequate funding landscape in Germany from the industry's perspective.
Pixomondo has been involved in numerous internationally successful film and series productions, including Game of Thrones, The Boys and House of the Dragon. The company has received numerous awards for its work, including Emmy, BAFTA and Oscar awards.
