The independent film studio founded by Ben Affleck, Matt Damon and Gerry Cardinale Artists Equity has signed an exclusive agreement with Sony Pictures. Over the next three years, Sony will distribute all cinema films developed and produced by Artists Equity worldwide. Sony will take over the financing as well as the exploitation of ancillary rights. However, Artists Equity reserves the right to co-finance individual projects.
Tom Rothman, Chairman of the Motion Picture Group at Sony Pictures, praised the young production company: "Artists Equity has established itself as a reliable producer of high-quality and commercially successful films in an astonishingly short time. I have known Ben and Matt for many years and admire their talent and intelligence. The fact that they are now focusing on the cinema market is a stroke of luck for Sony."
Ben Affleck, CEO of Artists Equity, also expressed his excitement about the collaboration: "It's a significant step for us to be working with Sony Pictures to get feature films off the ground - especially with Tom Rothman, who Matt and I have worked with for over twenty years. Sony is fully committed to the cinema experience - as are we. We want to make films that are meant for the big screen - for the shared experience in the dark auditorium."
Upcoming projects from Artists Equity include the action film RIP by Joe Carnahan with Damon, Affleck, Teyana Taylor and Scott Adkins, the thriller-drama Animals directed by Affleck with Gillian Anderson, Steven Yeun and Kerry Washington as well as Kiss of the Spider Woman - a film adaptation of the musical, which has won seven Tony Awards and stars Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna.
Since its foundation in 2022, Artists Equity has realised several notable productions. These include Affleck's film Air, The Instigators with Damon and Casey Affleck, The Accountant 2 with Jon Bernthal and J.K. Simmons, Unstoppable with Jennifer Lopez and Don Cheadle and Small Things Like These with Cillian Murphy.
