The planned increase in film funding to around 250 million euros is giving rise to great hope in the industry. The Association of Technical Organisations for Film and Television (VTFF) sees this step by the federal government as an important impulse to make German film and series production competitive again.
"The increase in funding can lead Germany as a production location out of the long-standing economic crisis," explains Achim Rohnke, Managing Director of VTFF. Following the increase in production quotas in the spring, the increase in volume is urgently needed to stop the increasing relocation of production abroad.
Rohnke emphasises: "For studios, technical service providers and post-production companies, this could mean the end of the existential crisis." The new funding would enable resources that had been written off to be reactivated, staff to be retained and investments to be made. The return of international productions to Germany could also trigger important employment effects.
However, the association points out that the new funding model does not completely replace the previously favoured tax incentive system. In order to ensure long-term planning security for producers, the VTFF is calling for reliable, multi-year funding.
Special thanks go to the Minister of State for Culture, Wolfram Weimer, who played a key role in favour of the increase. It is now up to the Ministry of Finance to push ahead with implementation quickly so that the announced measures actually have an effect.
The VTFF sees the funding increase as an opportunity to get the German film industry back on track for growth and at the same time secure important jobs in the industry.
