Netflix is investing in the future of film production - specifically with artificial intelligence. The streaming company has acquired the small US start-up InterPositive which specialises in AI tools for film production. With just 16 employees, the company develops software that analyses filmed footage and supports the crew with lighting, colour correction, image optimisation and continuity.
In contrast to generative AI, which creates films autonomously, this is about Practical support in day-to-day production. The technology helps to make processes more efficient, shorten production times and keep quality consistently high - without losing creative control.
Strategically, Netflix is signalling that it is not just about content, but also about production infrastructure. The tools will initially be used internally and could also be made available to partner studios in the long term.
This is an exciting example for the German film industry. Studios in this country are also increasingly experimenting with AI in post-production and VFX. Netflix shows that AI is not just hype, but a tool that can improve real production processes.
Netflix combines technology and the art of film to produce more efficiently - a trend that could be groundbreaking for the industry worldwide.
