On 27 June 2026, the 43rd FILMFEST MÜNCHEN was officially opened. The start of the festival marks not only the beginning of a week of international cinema, but also a key gathering place for the German and international film industries.

As well as screening more than 130 films, the festival focuses in particular on industry issues such as networking, supporting emerging talent and international collaboration. In recent years, the festival has increasingly established itself as a platform where producers, filmmakers, funding bodies and industry partners can exchange views on the future of filmmaking.

The FILMFEST MÜNCHEN Industry Days, in particular, play a key role in this regard. They have become an integral part of the German film industry and provide a forum for discussions on production conditions, financing, talent and the structural development of Germany as a film production hub.

There is a particular focus on supporting young talent. As part of the NewMotion programme, discussions took place on how to make it easier for young talent to break into the film industry. Since the project began, over 260 young professionals have gained practical experience on set through so-called ‘shadowing’ placements. The programme shows that a lack of networks and high barriers to entry remain key challenges for the next generation of professionals in the industry.

The discussions surrounding NewMotion made it clear that the film industry needs to invest more heavily in young talent in the long term. Industry representatives called for greater openness, diversity and concrete opportunities for those starting out. Production companies are increasingly faced with the challenge not only of nurturing talent, but also of offering them sustainable career prospects.

The festival is also continuing to gain in prominence on the international stage. With its inclusion in the FIAPF-accredited festival network, FILMFEST MÜNCHEN has been awarded an internationally recognised seal of quality. This accreditation strengthens the festival’s position as a reliable platform for filmmakers, producers and international partners, and underlines its role within the global festival network.

Overall, this development shows that FILMFEST MÜNCHEN has long since become more than just a festival for the general public. It has evolved into a key industry gathering where issues concerning the future of German cinema are discussed – from emerging talent and diversity through to international collaborations and strengthening Germany’s position as a film production hub.
