More than 100 Austrian film-makers have joined the social media campaign #FairStreamBetter launched. They are calling on Austrian politicians to introduce a levy on international streaming providers that generate revenue in Austria. The aim is to generate additional funding for the domestic film industry.

The campaign was launched on 24 August and is aimed in particular at the Austrian federal government. Through videos and social media posts, the filmmakers involved aim to draw attention to the demand. Supporters include, amongst others, Verena Altenberger, Manuel Rubey, Simon Schwarz, Valerie Huber, Pia Hierzegger, Ursula Strauss and Harald Sicheritz.

What is required is a combination of Streaming levy and investment in Austrian productions. International streaming platforms are thus expected to contribute to Austria’s position as a film production centre, from whose talent, production structures and expertise they benefit.

Claudia Wohlgenannt, chair of the Film and Music Industry Association in Vienna and the campaign’s initiator, now believes it is up to the politicians to act. The industry is expecting a concrete decision on a permanent arrangement this autumn.

Alexander Dumreicher-Ivanceanu, chairman of the Professional Association of the Film and Music Industry, also describes the campaign as a signal to politicians. The debate over a streaming levy has been ongoing for months. A decision must now be reached based on the discussions to date in order to create a level playing field and ensure the sustainable funding of Austrian cinema.
