The German Federal Film Board (FFA) is a founding member of the new Alliance Lumière. The alliance was launched on 7 September as part of the first Sommet Lumière in Saint-Paul-de-Vence, in the south of France. The aim is to strengthen links between public film institutions worldwide and to foster greater dialogue on the common challenges facing the film industry.

Key areas of focus include the future of cinema, cultural diversity, new technologies and artificial intelligence, intellectual property, film education, sustainability and international cooperation. The Alliance Lumière is not intended to standardise different national funding models, but rather to create a common platform for issues that are increasingly relevant across national borders.

For the FFA, international networking complements existing regional alliances. FFA Executive Director Peter Dinges emphasises that, in light of digital changes, film policy must focus more closely on the entire journey of a film – from production through to visibility and reaching its audience.

The alliance intends to gradually develop specific areas for joint action. The plan is to hold two meetings a year in future. According to the FFA, the first results of the collaboration are expected in the medium term.
