VG Bild-Kunst is once again campaigning for film creators to receive a direct share of the revenue generated by streaming services. At a parliamentary event on 7 October in Berlin, the collecting society focused on the demand for a statutory right to direct remuneration under the title „Streaming: Endless exploitation – hardly any remuneration“.

According to VG Bild-Kunst, creators in fields such as directing, cinematography and editing are to receive usage-based remuneration in future for the exploitation of their works on video-on-demand platforms. The payments are to be made directly by the platform operators to the collecting society, which will then distribute them to the rights holders. This would also allow older productions that are still being streamed to be taken into account.

Two studies examine the remuneration of film creators and the effectiveness of common remuneration rules in the field of film direction. VG Bild-Kunst does not consider the existing regulations to provide a sufficient basis for an appropriate share of digital exploitation revenues. However, new legislation has yet to be introduced. For the time being, we must await the ruling of the European Court of Justice in the „StreamZ“ case.
